Vital Qi Constitutional Hydrotherapy – Part 1: A Harmonious Blend of Naturopathy and Chinese Medicine

By: Dr. Angela Phillips, Hydrotherapist

Vital Qi Constitutional Hydrotherapy is a unique and transformative healing practice that combines the wisdom of ancient Chinese medicine with the holistic benefits of naturopathic hydrotherapy. Developed by Dr. Toby, this modality reflects his deep passion for both vitalistic naturopathic care and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The primary goal is to invigorate and strengthen the body’s vital healing force, setting the stage for optimal health and wellness.

Primary Uses for Hydrotherapy

People often experience improvements in various areas, such as digestion, sleep, mood, menstrual health, energy levels, and overall vitality. It is a treatment indicated for all these symptoms, plus diagnoses of psoriasis, prostatitis, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, acute infection, certain circulatory ailments, nervous system imbalance, and numerous others. Hydrotherapy involves the use of water—whether hot, cold, neutral, or in various combinations—to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Techniques include Russian baths, salt glows, foot baths, steam inhalation, sitz baths, fomentations, enemas, peat baths, and more, each chosen based on individual needs.

History and Our Use of Constitutional Hydrotherapy

At CDA Acupuncture and Holistic Healing, we specialize in Constitutional Hydrotherapy, which is particularly effective in whole-body detoxification and immune system stimulation. Constitutional Hydrotherapy gets its name from its ability to transform the very constitution of each cell—enhancing detoxification while improving nutrient absorption and cellular function.

The roots of this therapy can be traced back to Austria, where Vincenz Priessnitz began treating people from around the world using wet sheet wraps and other cold-water applications. After experiencing the healing effects of cold water on his own injured ribs and wrist, he developed methods that became the foundation of modern hydrotherapy.

Later, Dr. Wilhelm Winternitz, a neurologist, played a key role in giving hydrotherapy a solid physiological basis. The water-based treatments popularized by late 19th-century practitioners like Sebastian Kneipp, Louis Kuhne, Friedrich Bilz, and Emanuel Felke (also known as Father Just) all find their origins in Priessnitz’s early work.

In 1917, Dr. O.G. Carroll brought this European tradition to the United States, developing a refined approach he named constitutional hydrotherapy. Practicing in Spokane, Washington, he enhanced the method by incorporating electrical physiotherapy and the strategic use of hot and cold towels to stimulate circulation and support the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Today, constitutional hydrotherapy remains a cornerstone of naturopathic medical education and a vitalistic foundation of treatment.

Though every naturopathic doctor is trained in this technique, it is surprisingly underused in clinical practice. Those who do apply it often witness its profound therapeutic effects. Constitutional hydrotherapy has long been used to support detoxification from heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and the everyday toxins we accumulate through poor diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposure.

Research conducted by the National College of Naturopathic Medicine and the Windrose Clinic (established by O.G. Carroll in neighboring Spokane) has shown that constitutional hydrotherapy can raise low basal body temperature, regulate blood sugar, and help balance blood pressure. Its impact on the immune system is particularly impressive—within just six hours of a single session, a white blood cell increase of up to 10,000 cells is commonly observed. This makes it a powerful tool for enhancing immunity and addressing conditions like antibiotic-resistant infections.

What’s an appointment like?

A typical constitutional hydrotherapy session involves alternating hot and cold towels applied to the torso (chest, abdomen, and back) along with gentle alpha-wave electrical therapy to strategic acupuncture points and cranial electrical stimulation which promotes autonomic regulation, including vagal nerve stimulation and brain alpha wave enhancement. The acupuncture points were selected to stimulate the Qi -the life force that forms the foundation of TCM. In the next blog, we’ll dive deeper into the TCM aspects of this healing practice.

How about some anecdotal evidence?

From personal experience and clinical observations, some of the most common benefits of constitutional hydrotherapy include reduced anxiety, increased energy, enhanced immune function, improved sleep, and overall detoxification, including better bowel movements. While some benefits may not be immediately visible, constitutional hydrotherapy also promotes mitochondrial health, Vagus nerve regulation, supports blood sugar balance, improves circulation, and boosts metabolism.

During my clinical internship, I had the privilege of working with residents at the Salvation Army, where, despite not having a fancy hydrotherapy suite, we still provided the incredible benefits of constitutional hydrotherapy. The most common concerns the residents had were insomnia, fatigue, pain, stress, and a general feeling of being run down. Week after week, they returned, experiencing profound relaxation and healing. Although significant health improvements typically require about 10 sessions, even the first session can bring noticeable changes.
